ALL DOGS NEED A CAREFUL TRANSITION WHEN SWITCHING TO WILD.
HOW YOU TRANSITION DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU'RE CURRENTLY FEEDING
Every dog is unique so these transition plans are a starting point. You may need to move slower than we recommend to keep your dog comfortable.
Transitioning slowly is important because it:
- Supports digestive comfort
- Helps maintain consistent stools
- Allows the gut microbiome to adjust
- Encourages acceptance of new food
During the transition, try to stick to one recipe to help your dog settled onto their new diet.
After the initial transition, you do not need to complete a full transition between recipes but, for the first time you feed a new recipe, we recommend taking 2-3 days to slowly introduce the new one before switching entirely.
TRIED & TESTED TRANSITION PLANS
COLD-PRESSED TRANSITION
The speed of transition depends on the type of food your dog is currently eating.
Moving from a low-moisture diet?
If your dog currently eats kibble, cold-pressed, baked or air-dried food, follow the 15-day transition.
Moving from a high-moisture diet?
If your dog currently eats raw, fresh, gently cooked or wet food, follow the 5-week transition. These diets contain significantly more moisture so a slower transition helps your dog's digestive system adapt comfortably.
FRESH FROZEN TRANSITION
The speed of transition depends on the type of food your dog is currently eating.
Moving from a high-moisture diet?
If your dog currently eats raw, fresh, gently cooked or wet food, follow the 15-day transition.
Moving from a low-moisture diet?
If your dog currently eats kibble, cold-pressed, baked or air-dried food, follow the 5-week transition. This gives your dog time to adjust from a lower-moisture diet to a fresh frozen recipe,
TIPS & TRICKS
- Stay Positive: Dogs have incredible skills of being able to pick up on your energy and mood. If you stay calm and positive, it helps them feel relaxed
- Reward Calm Curiosity: Praise your dog when they show interest in the new food to create a positive association
- Move At Your Dog's Pace: Only increase the amount of WILD in their diet when they've had at least 2 settled days. If they have any digestive upset, read our Troubleshooting Guide and only increase the amount of WILD when they're comfortable
- Add Water to Cold-Pressed Recipes: Water can bring out the amazing natural aromas in the food, making it even more tempting
- Stick to Routine: Keep a regular feeding schedule
- Monitor Hydration: Always keep plenty of fresh water available, as you normally would. Cold-pressed dog foods have to be made with dry ingredients so are naturally lower in moisture than other diets. It's normal for dogs to drink more initially to balance this out. If you're unsure, you should speak to your vet.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We recommend adding water to help release all of the natural aromas in the ingredients. Dogs have a stronger sense of smell than taste so this is a great way to encourage them to eat their new food.
It also makes it much easier to mix in with your dog's current food.
After two weeks, you can slowly reduce the amount of water you add over a week or continue adding water, if that's what your dog prefers.
That's not a problem - it's likely only temporary. Dogs are naturally cautious of new foods, and some take longer to accept it.
It's worth bearing in mind that your dog probably isn't being picky or not enjoying their food. What's more likely is that they don't understand why their usual routine and food has changed so are being cautious.

There are different transitions because cold-pressed dog food is different to raw and commercial dry foods.
As a rule of thumb, the more moisture there is in their current diet, the longer they'll need to fully transition onto WILD's cold-pressed. This is why the transition from raw food is much longer.
The opposite applies to fresh frozen recipes as these have significantly more moisture than dry foods.
this completely depends on your dog's weight, breed, age and activity level.
We recommend that you follow the Transition Plan above and use the feeding guidelines on our packaging and website to tell you how much your dog needs everyday.
From our Transition Plan and Feeding Guidelines, you can work out what percentage of the daily feeding guideline you need to feed throughout the transition period.
Yes, it's possible for stools to temporarily soften or change colour during the transition period. This is because their gut needs to get used to the low moisture content in WILD's cold-pressed food and the high-quality ingredients.
If you've noticed changes in your dog's stool that you're unsure about, email us at contact@wildpetfood.co.uk, refer to your Transition Guide from your first order or speak to your vet.
