FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We know choosing the right food for your dog is a big decision, which is why we believe in being open, transparent and honest about what goes into our food and how we do things.
Below, you'll find answers to some of our most commonly asked questions about WILD.

ABOUT WILD
Yes, WILD meets the strict FEDIAF nutritional guidelines for complete and balanced foods.
Our founder, Ross, has also completed a Level 3 Diploma in Canine Nutrition and works with vets and nutritionists to develop all of our recipes.
Yes - our founder, Ross, is a Level 3 qualified canine nutritionists, and every WILD recipe is developed in collaboration with experienced vets and nutritionists.
This means each recipe is designed to provide the best possible nutrition for dogs.
All of our recipes are also FEDIAF compliant, meeting the strict nutritional guidelines for complete and balanced dog food.
Yes - all WILD Pet Food recipes are nutritionally complete and balanced, meaning they provide everything your dog needs as part of their daily diet.
Our recipes are made using high-quality ingredients chosen for their nutritional functionality, alongside gentle cold-pressed processing to help retain nutrients.
All complete meal recipes are formulated to meet FEDIAF nutritional guidelines for complete dog food.
Any products that are complementary - such as treats or supplements - are clearly labelled as such on the packaging, so it’s always easy to tell which products are intended as complete meals.
Yes - WILD can be fed alongside other foods, including raw, wet, fresh or traditional (extruded) dry food.
Our recipes are complete and balanced, meaning they provide everything your dog needs when fed on their own. Some owners choose to feed WILD exclusively, while others prefer to combine it with other foods for added variety.
If you do mix foods, it’s important to use each brand’s feeding guidelines to calculate portions, rather than estimating based on what you see in the bowl. For example, a bowl that looks “50/50” may not actually provide 50% of your dog’s nutritional requirements from each food.
For puppies, dogs with medical conditions, or more complex feeding approaches, we’d always recommend speaking with a qualified and insured canine nutritionist to ensure the overall diet remains balanced and appropriate for your dog’s individual needs.
Yes - puppies can eat WILD Pet Food.
Our recipes are naturally high in quality animal protein and nutrient-dense ingredients, making them a great option for growing dogs. The protein and fat levels help support healthy growth, development and energy requirements during puppyhood.
We generally recommend starting puppies on our Gentle range until around 6 months of age, as it’s specifically formulated to be gentle and easy to digest during the early stages of development.
After this, many owners either continue feeding Gentle Adult or transition onto our 80:20 range, depending on their dog’s individual needs.
The minimum recommended ages for each range are:
• Cold-Pressed: from 2 months+
• Fresh Frozen: from 3 months+
As with any dietary change, we’d recommend transitioning gradually over several days to help support digestion.
Our feeding guidelines are shown as ranges rather than exact amounts because every dog is different - even dogs of the same weight.
Two dogs that both weigh 20kg, for example, may have completely different feeding requirements depending on factors such as breed, age, activity level, metabolism and body condition.
That’s why our feeding recommendations are designed to be a sensible starting point, allowing you to adjust slightly based on your dog’s individual needs and condition over time.
As a general guide:
• If your dog is gaining unwanted weight, reduce their daily portion slightly.
• If they seem too lean, hungry, or are losing weight, increase their portion gradually.
• For weight loss, feeding around 10–15% below the guideline amount can be a useful starting point.
We’d always recommend monitoring your dog’s weight and body condition regularly, particularly when changing food or adjusting feeding amounts.
This flexible approach helps ensure your dog maintains a healthy weight while getting the nutrition they need.
How long transitioning takes can vary depending on your dog’s previous diet and their individual digestive sensitivity.
Because WILD is a highly nutritious, nutrient-dense food, we always recommend transitioning gradually over at least 2 weeks to help support digestion and allow your dog to adjust comfortably.
Some dogs transition very easily, while others may benefit from taking things even slower - especially if they’re coming from a highly processed diet or have a sensitive stomach.
With your first order, you’ll receive a transition guide to help you make the switch smoothly. We’ll also email this guide to you after your order is placed, and you can find it anytime on our website under “Information About Our Food” in the navigation menu.
During your transition, our Canine Support Advisor, Kirsty, will also be in touch to help support you and answer any questions you may have along the way.
“Working Dog Food” is a UK tax classification used for dog foods intended for working and active dogs. Products sold as working dog food are exempt from VAT under current HMRC guidelines.
Our 80:20 recipes are labelled as working dog food due to their nutritional profile, including higher protein and fat levels designed to support active dogs and energy expenditure.
As with any complete diet, feeding amounts should always be adjusted based on your dog’s individual activity level, body condition and lifestyle.
80:20 refers to the ratio of ingredients used in the recipe - 80% animal ingredients and 20% fruits, vegetables and functional superfoods.
The ratio is inspired by the principles many raw feeders have followed for years, aiming to provide dogs with a diet rich in high-animal ingredients alongside carefully selected plant-based ingredients.
At WILD, we've taken those same principles and combined them with high-quality functional ingredients and gentle processing to create convenient, highly nutritious diets.
We take ingredient sourcing extremely seriously, and every supplier goes through a careful review process before being considered for our recipes.
We work with vets and nutritionists who assess ingredient specifications in detail, because not all ingredients are nutritionally equal - even when they sound similar on a label.
When selecting suppliers and ingredients, we prioritise:
• Nutritional quality - ingredients chosen for their functionality, digestibility and nutritional value
• Responsible sourcing - supporting UK sourcing wherever possible
• Sustainability - including responsibly sourced meats and reducing waste where we can, such as using wonky vegetables that would otherwise go unused
Our goal is to source ingredients that are not only highly nutritious for dogs, but also responsibly and thoughtfully selected.
Our Honest Maths Guarantee is our commitment to complete ingredient transparency.
We believe you deserve to know exactly what’s in your dog’s food - without vague ingredient terms, misleading percentages or confusing marketing claims.
That’s why every WILD recipe includes a full ingredient breakdown with clear percentages, so you can see exactly what’s going into your dog’s bowl.
How do we do this differently?
Most dry dog foods calculate ingredient percentages before processing. Because fresh meat contains around 75% water, this can make fresh meat inclusion appear much higher on the label than it actually is in the finished food once the moisture has been removed.
At WILD, we do the opposite.
We calculate our ingredient percentages after processing, giving a more honest and accurate representation of what’s actually in the final food your dog eats.
We believe this level of transparency should be the industry standard.
That’s what we call the Honest Maths Guarantee - what you see on the label is what your dog is actually getting in their bowl.
Our food packaging is made from recyclable materials.
As local councils restrict the types of plastic packaging that can be recycled, the easiest way to recycle WILD packaging is to visit your local large supermarket recycle scheme and recycle there.
It’s completely normal for some dogs to be hesitant when trying a new food for the first time - especially when switching to a food with a very different texture, smell and nutritional profile.
We’d always recommend introducing WILD gradually by mixing it with your dog’s current food over at least 2 weeks, rather than serving it on its own straight away. Giving your dog time to adjust slowly can make a big difference.
Some dogs transition immediately, while others may need a little more encouragement and patience - particularly if they’ve eaten the same food for a long time.
If your dog is struggling with the transition, our Canine Support Advisor, Kirsty, is here to help guide you through it.
Depending on your dog’s preferences and needs, this may include adjusting the transition approach, trying a different recipe free of charge, or discussing our money-back guarantee (T&Cs apply).
You can also visit our Troubleshooting Guide for additional tips and support during the transition process.

COLD-PRESSED FAQS
Cold-pressing is a gentler way of making dry dog food compared to traditional extrusion methods used for most kibble.
First, the raw ingredients are flash pasteurised to help eliminate harmful bacteria and pathogens. They are then slowly dehydrated using airflow at low temperatures of around 70°C until the desired moisture content is reached - helping preserve the integrity of the ingredients without heavily cooking them.
Once dehydrated, the ingredients are blended together and cold-pressed into nuggets. During this stage, the ingredients only reach temperatures of around 45°C at the point of pressing, which is significantly lower than traditional kibble manufacturing.
The result is a highly nutritious dry food made using minimal processing methods, while still being shelf-stable and convenient to feed.
Like other dry foods, WILD can be stored in a cupboard and simply weighed out daily based on your dog’s feeding requirements.
We believe dog food labels should be clear, transparent and easy to understand.
That’s why our recipes are made using high-quality animal ingredients alongside carefully selected fruit, vegetables and functional superfoods - without unnecessary fillers or confusing ingredient lists.
Our 80:20 recipes contain 80% animal ingredients and 20% fruit, vegetables and superfoods, all chosen for their nutritional functionality and purpose.
As part of our Honest Maths Guarantee, all ingredients are weighed after dehydration and processing, giving a more accurate representation of what’s actually in your dog’s bowl.
You can explore the ingredients, nutritional information and full breakdowns for each recipe on our Shop page.
Our meat comes from the same production lines ad human-grade food, but we specifically choose cuts reserved for dogs and cats.
This means it's technically pet-grade, but the quality is extremely high - just like you'd expect from WILD.
WILD Pet Food is currently the highest-rated cold-pressed dog food on All About Dog Food, with a rating of 89%.
This reflects our focus on ingredient quality, transparency and nutritional formulation across our recipes.
Our recipes are made using 80% animal ingredients alongside fruit, vegetables and functional superfoods, with no grains, peas, legumes or unnecessary fillers. We also use gentle cold-pressed processing methods designed to retain more natural nutritional value compared to traditional extruded kibble.
As part of our Honest Maths Guarantee, we calculate ingredient percentages after processing and dehydration, providing a more accurate representation of what’s actually in the finished food.
All About Dog Food uses an independent scoring system based on factors such as ingredient quality, nutritional composition and formulation, and our recipes score highly across these areas.
The higher protein percentage is simply a result of how we calculate our nutritional analysis.
Most dry dog food brands calculate ingredient percentages before processing, while the ingredients still contain large amounts of water. Because water adds weight, this can make protein levels appear lower on the final analysis.
At WILD, we do things differently.
As part of our Honest Maths Guarantee, we calculate our ingredients after dehydration and processing. This gives a more accurate representation of the nutrients that are actually present in the finished food your dog eats.
That means the protein percentage shown on our analysis isn’t artificially inflated - it’s simply not diluted by water weight.
This is also why our nutritional profile is often more comparable to a raw diet on a dry matter basis, but in a convenient cold-pressed format.
No, you don't need to worry. All pathogens are removed as part of the dehydration process that our ingredients go through.
You can be sure that WILD Pet Food is completely safe and pathogen free.
Because a little goes a long way.
With WILD, you need to feed much less than kibble due to its high nutritional density and the removal of ~75% water from the raw ingredients.
For specific feeding guidelines, refer to our feeding guidelines page on individual product pages.
The easiest way to keep WILD is in its original bag - our bags have a resealable strip across the top to keep the pellets in the best condition.
If you prefer, you can pour it into a clean, dry airtight container. Make sure the container is completely dry inside before filling it.
In both cases, store your WILD Pet Food somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
This is very common for dogs who have never been on a cold-press first. It's to do with moisture in the food.
Much like humans, dogs will get water from food and drinking.
Because your dog is used to getting some moisture from their food and their cold-pressed meals has less than they're used to, they know they need to compensate and they start drinking more.
The typical solution for what you're experiencing is a few options:
1. Slower Transition - sometimes dogs need even longer to slowly transition over and learn about their new water limits.
2. Fresh Water - ensure your dog has a constant supply of fresh, clean water.
3. Mix WILD With Water - one of the big benefits of cold-press is that it re-takes on moisture (unlike kibble) and can be turned into a sort of paste/wet food.
This way your dogs will still get part of their water needs from the food, so they are less reliant on drinking.
Because cold-pressed food is made using a gentler, less heavily processed method than traditional extruded kibble, the pellets are naturally more delicate and can break more easily during handling and transit.
Any “dust” you may see in the bag is typically just small pieces of broken cold-pressed pellets - not a separate ingredient or filler.
To help minimise this, our manufacturing process includes a sieving stage designed to remove excess fine particles before packing. We also test batches for moisture content to help ensure the food remains stable, and our packaging is designed to protect the product during delivery as much as possible.
Some natural breakage can still occur in transit, but this is completely normal for minimally processed cold-pressed food.
Absolutely - WILD can be used to make homemade dog-friendly birthday cakes, treats and enrichment activities.
Because our cold-pressed recipes are minimally processed and highly nutritious, many customers use them in creative ways beyond mealtimes.
If you’d like to make a simple birthday cake or baked treat using WILD, we’d recommend:
• Rehydrating the pellets first using warm water
• Mixing with a dog-safe binding ingredient such as egg (if suitable for your dog)
• Baking gently at around 160–170°C for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until just set
Keeping baking temperatures lower and bake times shorter can help preserve more of the nutritional value.
For toppings, dog-safe options such as plain yoghurt, mashed banana or xylitol-free peanut butter can work well once cooled.
You can also avoid baking altogether by making no-bake cakes - simply rehydrate the food, press it into a mould, chill, and decorate.
WILD also works brilliantly for enrichment and homemade treats, including:
• Lick mats - rehydrate into a paste and spread across the mat
• Frozen treats - freeze rehydrated WILD into ice cube trays during warmer months
• Training rewards - use individual pellets as treats on walks or during training
• Puzzle feeders and treat dispensers - great for mental stimulation and slower feeding
As always, treats and extras should be fed alongside a balanced diet and adjusted within your dog’s daily feeding allowance where appropriate.
FRESH FROZEN FAQS
Our Fresh Frozen recipes are made using high-quality ingredients that are gently cooked at low temperatures in a sous vide-style process.
The ingredients are slowly cooked at approximately 80°C to help eliminate pathogens while preserving as much nutritional integrity as possible through minimal processing.
Once prepared, the food is portioned into 400g packs, packaged, and frozen ready for delivery to your door.
Our Fresh Frozen is human-grade.
This means the quality is extremely high - just like you'd expect from WILD.
WILD Pet Food is currently the highest-rated Fresh Frozen dog food on All About Dog Food, with a rating of 95%.

Every Fresh Frozen order is carefully packed using insulated packaging and ice packs to help keep the food cold during transit.
Depending on external temperatures and courier transit times, your order may arrive:
• Completely frozen
• Partially thawed
• Cold to the touch, but no longer frozen
All of these can be completely normal - the most important thing is the temperature of the food on arrival.
If your packs arrive frozen or partially thawed:
• Move the packs you plan to use first into the fridge to defrost
• Allow approximately 24 hours for full defrosting
• Store the remaining packs in your freezer
If your packs arrive cold to the touch (below 4°C), they are still safe to use and can be refrigerated or refrozen as appropriate.
If the food arrives warm or you’re concerned about the condition of your order, please contact us at contact@wildpetfood.co.uk and our team will be happy to help.
To help keep your dog’s food safe and at its best, we’d recommend following the handling and feeding guidance below:
• Keep packs frozen until around 24 hours before you plan to use them
• Defrost thoroughly in the fridge before feeding
• Once defrosted, keep refrigerated and store separately from other foods where possible
• Use within 3 days of defrosting
• Wash hands, utensils and surfaces thoroughly after handling
As with any fresh or frozen pet food, good hygiene and safe storage are important to help maintain quality and freshness.
No - WILD Fresh Frozen recipes are completely safe and pathogen-free.
Any harmful bacteria are removed as part of our gentle cooking process, making the food safe to handle and serve.
That said, we still recommend following good hygiene practices when handling your dog’s food, just as you would with your own food - such as washing hands, cleaning surfaces, and storing the food correctly after opening.
Fresh Frozen recipes should be stored in the freezer until you’re ready to use them.
Around 24 hours before feeding, move the pack you need into the fridge and allow it to defrost thoroughly. We’d recommend storing it separately from other foods where possible.
Once defrosted and opened, use within 3 days and keep refrigerated between meals.
